The Adelaide, Hills & South East route is located in Southern Australia, which is known as the driest state in the driest continent on the planet. This 1950's route covers the entire metropolitan area of Adelaide and a number of branch lines: over 600 miles of main line. It is considered an absolute masterpiece and is worth downloading and running.  It  can be downloaded as a single self-install file (350MB) or as separate files at the following link:

Denis has been able to test most areas and it looks OK.  Although he feels confident the template is fit to be released as is, he has decided to release it as a Beta version to allow users to report any problems whatsoever for a while.  Please report those in the forum.

Posted 1/28/2021.  The CN Balav2 route represents the Bala Sub and connecting Subs to the MacMillan Yard, about 10 miles of the Halton Sub which also include the Brampton Intermodal Terminal (B.I.T.).  It goes North on the Bala Sub through Washago and ends North of Parry Sound. It also includes the CP line from Mactier to North of Parry Sound. The line also goes South to the Union Station and DON Yards where GO trains are stored. The template package includes 14 templates and 150 serviceable sidings.

Posted 11/12/2017.  CN Blackfoot Summer Edition V1 (also referred to as Blackfoot V3).   Freeware route for Open Rails available at Trainsim.com (compatible with MSTS – see template notes for limitations).  Included are eastbound and westbound templates covering entire route from North Battleford, Saskatchewan to Vermilion, Alberta, and a local template covering the Lloydminster area including the Husky energy complex, ADM facility, NGL loading terminal and others.  MLT Bala 2.0 payware route required for rolling stock along with several freeware downloads from Trainsim.com.  By Eric Anderson.   

The Blue Comet route is a complex network of CNJ, PRR and LV lines which spans along the Ocean and inside the coast. The route covers from Jersey City going south to Atlantic City Eight (8) templates with 425 serviceable sidings.

Posted 12/29/15.  The Buffalo Route is a complex network of 10 railroads that starts North at Niagara Falls (Canada) and ends to Gowanda NY, about 60 miles South. The ten railroads are the Penn Central (PC), the Erie Lackawanna (EL), the Lehigh Valley (LV), the Canadian National (CN), the Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo (TH&B), the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O), the Norfolk & Western (N&W), the South Buffalo (SB), the Buffalo Creek (BCK) and the Niagara Junction (NIAJ). The route also crosses the Fort Erie International Bridge to Fort Erie (Canada) where the PC, N&W and CN has yards in the area.

Posted 2/20/2011.  Activity Generator templates for Cajon Pass 4.  There are four templates for this version of Cajon Pass.  Two are for the BNSF trackage between L.A. and Barstow.  The other two are for UP trains that travel between West Colton and the Barstow area.  This route, with the addition of West Colton, has approximately 580 tracks to switch. 3 template versions have been included, one using all freeware rolling stock, another using some from Facing Point's Surfliner route and the last one using Surfliner and Metrolink stock as released by 3DTrains. Quite a few rolling stock downloads are required, a full list is provided.  Most of the equipment has been used in the following templates, Cajon Pass, Cajon Pass 3ML, ATSF Needles Sub, and the Surfliner route. A detailed route map, courtesy of Craig Kawahara, has also been included for use in many of the industrial areas.

Posted 10/27/2014.  The California Western Railroad (CWR) route (available only at Elvas Tower) runs from Fort Bragg to Willits CA, linking to the North Coast Route (NCR) network. It carried mostly lumber in the past and is now a touristic rail line where the famous Skunk Train runs. Timeframe is around the seventies. Three (templates with 18 serviceable sidings)

The Canton route’s complete network (C-S-T-G) covers the cities of Canton, Suddenly, Thompson and finally Grove City. Two Railroad lines share the same trackage along the mainline: the Family Lines Central (FLC) and the Canton Railroads. Four (4) Templates and 170 serviceable sidings.

The 170-mile Cima Sub route runs along the Union Pacific line from Las Vegas NV to Daggett CA, connecting with the BNSF mainline up to Barstow CA. It runs through Cima Hill, one of the steepest grades (2.2%) along the Union Pacific system. It includes the USMC facilities at Yermo and Nebo. The Cima Sub template pack includes 12 templates with 130 serviceable sidings.

Posted 11/25/2007.  The C&NW Clinton sub templates cover between East Clinton IL and Belle Plaine IA, including the City of Cedar Rapids IA and parts of the Cedar Rapids and Iowa Central (CRANDIC) railway system. For all C&NW fans, which will bring the user back in the seventies (70's). The template package for the Clinton Sub includes Eastbound (EB) and Westbound (WB) templates with multiple paths. More than 200 sidings for each direction to work with and AI traffic is present.   There is now a set up maps available for this route, thanks to Peter Mulvey for contributing them! 

Posted 10/29/2020.  The CN Ruel Sub is an important gateway between Eastern and Western Canada. It covers close to 150 miles between Capreol and Foleyet ON. 8 templates and close to 50 serviceable sidings.

Posted 12/29/15.  The Conrail (CR) Horseshoe Curve route is home of the world-famous Horseshoe Curve, located a few miles West of Altoona PA. The MSTS modelled route is 52 miles long (MP230 to MP282), mainly located between Altoona PA and Johnstown PA. The CR template package is composed of 11 Templates and 150 serviceable sidings.

Posted 11/12/2017.  Shared by The Boston & Maine and Central Vermont Railroads, the ConnRiver route template package contains 25 templates and has 225 serviceable sidings. The timeframe is 1956 and has a mix of prototypical and fictional templates. It also contains templates from the Rutland, the Claremont & Concord and Springfield Terminal railroads.

The Dogskill County (DC) Railway is a fictional railroad which scenery would suggest an area in Northwestern United States. Originally created by Wolfgang Fobbe, Moe Smith has upgraded the route, with the author’s permission, to add markers to unnamed sidings from the original release. Five (5) templates and about 150 serviceable sidings.

Posted 10-15-2020.  Updated route template package (v3 from v2), includes the entire DAR line between Windsor Jct and Yarmouth NS. Also includes some additional trackage from CN in the Yarmouth area and also between Kinsac and Bedford NS. 18 Templates and around 200 serviceable sidings.

The Dominion Atlantic Railway was a subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific running from Yarmouth in the south, along the western region of the province to Windsor, then east across the province to Windsor Junction and into Halifax over the Canadian National using trackage rights. The route covers about 110 kilometers of the Halifax and Kentville Subs, which is from Windsor Jct to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia.

The SLI Green River route covers 180 miles from Grand Junction CO to Helper UT. The scenery is a mix of desert and canyon scenery also to include the Colorado Plateau. Along the route (not simulated in the Green River route - see below for the Potash freeware route info) is located the Cane Creek branch (the Potash route) at Brendel. The freeware Potash route is 35.77 miles of undulating railway. It comes off the the Utah desert mainline at Brendel, UT (Crescent), and follows US 191 south towards Moab (Potash). A few miles north of town, the line veers west through the 7050-foot Bootlegger Tunnel, where it continues about five more miles down the Colorado River canyon to the mines in Potash. Ten (10) templates and 100 serviceable sidings.

Posted 8/5/2019.  The FJ&Gv2 route is set in the late 70s and runs from the Conrail interchange in Fonda to Broadalbin, New York. The half way point is Gloversville where the FJ&G had their shops and headquarters. By the late-70s the FJ&G was part of the Delaware-Otsego System. The template pack has 2 templates and 46 serviceable sidings.

This template also includes modifications to the route file itself (siding names added as mentioned).  Please first install the v 1.1 upgrade, then install this template, which includes the latest v 1.2 upgrade by Norm.   This template will not work with the previous (1.1) or original (1.0) versions of the route.  This new template is easy to install: after installing the v 1.1 update, simply unzip this new template to your \Train Simulator folder and all of the updates will be applied automatically and the template installed.

‘The Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) is the largest railroad museum in the United States. It is located 55 miles (89 km) northwest of downtown Chicago.       The template package includes 3 templates and about 25 serviceable sidings. The timeframe of the templates is in the early 90’s, during the last years of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (CNW) before its takeover by the Union Pacific in 1995.’

The JZD route is a Czech fictional 760 mm narrow-gauge route covering 30 km with some branches along the mainline. It starts South at Rudnik and ends North at Kamenice. Four (4) templates and 65 serviceable sidings.

Posted 6/19/2017. The Milwaukee Road (MILW) Coast Division, 1st Sub. route covers 99 miles of electrified single-track mainline between Othello WA and Cle Elum WA. It also includes Northern Pacific's (NP) non-electrified single-track mainline between Pomona WA and Cle Elum WA. There are 17 different templates and 135 serviceable sidings. Timeframe is around the late sixties (60's).

The Milwaukee Road (MILW) Coast Division, 2nd Sub. route covers between Cle Elum WA and the Seattle-Tacoma area . It includes the Milwaukee Road (MILW) (116 miles), the Northern Pacific (NP) Railroad (143 miles) and the Union Pacific (UP) Railroad (about 32 miles) between Black River Jct and the Argo yards, which also includes trackage rights on the MILW between Black River Jct and Tacoma. It has 420 serviceable sidings and 34 templates.

The Milwaukee Road Idaho Division route covers about 215 miles of the Milwaukee Road’s (MILW) non-electrified line from Othello WA to Avery ID. Includes some trackage from the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) which runs from East of Plummer to Tekoa and also in the Marengo area. Short sections of trackage over and under the MILW tracks from the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific railroads are also part of the route as well. Nine (9) templates with 115 serviceable sidings.

The MKT Templates takes you into the virtual MSTS world where the MKT Railroad has purchased the young A&M railroad and has renamed the former A&O Sub the MKT Sub. The route is 40 miles long and covers from Seligman going east to the cities of Urbanette and Berryville, both located a few miles apart at the Eastern end of the line. Five (5) Templates and 75 serviceable sidings.

The Monon-2 version 16 covers about 800 miles of track, from Chicago (Northwest) to Indianapolis (Southeast) and from Michigan City (Northeast) to Louisville (Southwest). From an aerial perspective, the Monon entire system looks like an “X”. Both sections criss-cross at Monon. The simulated route includes trackage from the Milwaukee Road between Latta and Bedford. In addition, the New York Central (NYC) railroad runs between Crawfordsville and Indianapolis. Finally included is the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) between Monticello and Reynolds. Twenty-eight (28) templates and about 600 serviceable sidings.

Update posted 2/14/09, fixes some path and AI traffic conflicts.  The Mountain Electric route is a fictional route run on electric motive power, an American-style reproduction of the MSTS Innsbruck-St.Anton route and combines with other features found in some other routes. Two lines are part of the package: The Mountain Electric line (MtE) and the Valley Transit line (ValleyT).

The MSTS North Coast Route covers 150 miles along Nortwestern California from Willits to Eureka, including parts of the California Western and the Arcata and Mad River Railroads. Six (6) templates and 140 serviceable sidings.

The Northwest Line is a fictional route, based in areas that would be likely located between Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. The Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railways (CP) are the main lines of the route. The CN mainline is mostly double-track and extends from Aspen River, the western end of the route to Antonar in the east. Besides the CN line, the single-tracked CP line starts also at Antonar and ends at Korimer, which hosts both CN and CP lines.Ten (10) templates and 225 serviceable sidings.

The Pahusett River Railway is a thirty (30) mile fictional electric railroad which scenery would suggest an area inside the Oregon and Washington States. Built along the Pahusett River, the route starts South at McKellen and reaches the town of Ferndale North. Four (4) templates and 100 serviceable sidings.

This is the Philadelphia Terminal Division template for the PRR route

which was created last summer.  The route folder name is PRR EAST REG.

This template was created for the beta version of the route and is made

available to users "AS IS".  Some rolling stock is not available to the

public, and the user will have to adjust the template himself.  Also,

the user will have to fix some paths in the Philadelphia area due to

some track changes.  It is possible that there might be other errors in

the template due to other changes in the route.

Posted 8/5/2019.  The PRR Eastern v2 route covers the Eastern Pennsylvania Railroad network between New York City and Washington through Philadelphia. It also goes Westward towards Harrisburg and Enola and West to Pittsburgh Also included are some trackage operated by the Lehigh Valley (LV), Reading (RDG), Central New Jersey (CNJ) and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroads (B&O). The present template package (part 1) covers the LV, RDG, CNJ and B&O railroads. There are 39 templates and about 450 serviceable sidings. Timeframe is set in the late fifties.

The Raurimu Spiral route is located between Ohakune and Taumarunui in New Zealand’s North Island, site of the world-famous Raurimu spiral route.The route is midway between Auckland (North) and Wellington (South), New Zealand’s Capital. Three (3) templates and about 30 serviceable sidings.

The RMD West route covers the Milwaukee Road’s (MILW) electrified line from Deer Lodge MT to Avery ID. It also covers the Northern Pacific’s (NP) section from Deer Lodge to Wallace with shared trackage between St-Regis and Haugan. West of Missoula, the NP route splits in two. The Northern section of the route goes through Evaro to reach Paradise while the Southern section goes through Nine Mile to reach Paradise via St-Regis. 16 templates with 180 serviceable sidings. Timeframe is 1961.

San Diego and Arizona (SD&A) route (route built by Mark DiVecchio)

Updated route template package (v3 from v2), includes complete scenery on the ACL line between Bradenton and Tampa. 32 templates and close to 450 serviceable sidings.

Posted 4-2016.  The Seaboard Air Line Florida Division templates are set in the pre-SCL era (1965) and includes mostly trackage from the Seaboard Air Line (SAL) Railroad and some from the Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) Railroad. For the SAL, trackage extends from Wildwood to Tampa, from Plant City to Bradenton via Durant and from Valrico towards Nichols and near Bradley Jct. For the ACL, it extends from the Tampa Uceta Yard to Bradenton. The template package has 25 different templates with more than 400 serviceable sidings.

The Santa Fe Seligman 2 route covers nearly 300 miles from Winslow AZ to Needles CA. It is a mix of high desert plateau and rugged mountain passes. The main yards are Needles, Seligman and Winslow and crosses Flagstaff along the way, the gateway to the Grand Canyon area and Kingman, between Seligman and Needles. The timeframe is set in the early to mid 90’s, just before the BNSF era. Six (6) Templates with 100 serviceable sidings.

The 240-mile Union Pacific Sharon Springs Route covers the section between Salina KS and West to Sharon Springs KS, close to the Kansas-Colorado state line. Six (6) templates and more than 100 serviceable sidings.

Updated 10/12/2009 to add some service files that were missing from the original post.  The Soldier Summit runs from Provo to Sunnyside Utah with the Utah Railroad branch from Martin yard to Mohrland. A total of 150 miles.  Requires rolling stock, can be downloaded here.  Template created by Peter Mulvey with testing and assistance from Norm Beveridge.

South Africa’s Great Karoo Route starts at Beaufort-West and ends North 70 miles further at Barnard with Hutchinson Yard, about 5 miles before the end of the route. It is a combination of double and single track main lines.The Great Karoo is part of the 1000-mile Capetown-Pretoria line,

The Stowe Northern route is a protolanced route with real location names. The scenery depicts an area located in Northern Vermont with heavy forests and mountain.  St.Albans VT is the Northern part of the route and moves South to Stowe and ends in Waterbury. It is mostly a single track route with some double track areas along the route. It has been re-released in May 2013 and is currently available at the Railyard web site (www.attherailyard.com) in the downloads section. Seven (7) templates and about 40 serviceable sidings.

Posted 11/29/09.  The Sumpter Valley Route runs from Whitney to Baker City Oregon, a total of 43 miles. At Baker City it interchanges with the Great Union Pacific Railroad.  There is no default rolling stock used in the template but all the rolling stock is included.

Posted 10/27/14.  The WOD route is located around the Washington DC area. It connects with the Southern Railroad at the Potomac Yards near Alexandria and covers about 75 miles of trackage, from Alexandria to Bluemont (60 miles) and from Rosslyn to Great Falls (15 miles). Both sections are connected by a 3-mile line from Thrifton Jct South to Bluemont Jct. Timeframe is in around the late thirties and early forties. Most of the trackage is electrified. Only the section south of the Potomac Yards to Alexandria (One & a half mile) required steam or diesel power to access the area.  The template package has three templates and around 60 serviceable sidings.

Posted 7/24/16.  Located between Belton MT and Athol ID, the Whitefish 10 route template package includes templates from the Burlington Northern (BN), Union Pacific (UP), Milwaukee Road (MILW) and Canadian Pacific (CP) railroads.  Timeframe is around 1975. 26 templates and around 230 serviceable sidings.

Updated 11-29-09.  Includes some minor changes to the ACT files but includes a major enhancement to the package: a newly finished complete map network including more than 110 maps with the marker's orientation to help in work selection and operations throughout the entire network. The Wupper 11 route, located in Western Germany, is part of the Rhein-Ruhr district (Ruhrgebiet), which is Germany's largest industrial centre and actually the country's largest city with about 9 million inhabitants.  The era for the template is set in today’s era. The main player engine is a class 145 electric engine which delivers about 8000 hp, which is almost the equivalent of 2 Dash9 engines (8800 hp). The required rolling stock file is the we11act1.zip  file (available at www.train-sim.com) which includes in the self-installer file some engines and rolling stock as well as some activity files.
